Tisby Graham is the one who binds us all β mother of Stephany, Tishia, Benjamin Augustus, Katie and Rebecca. From generation to generation, we remain beautifully connected through her.
Stephany George Graham was born enslaved on May 25, 1846, in Lake City, SC, on the plantation of Nelson Myers Graham. Though it was against the law to teach the enslaved, a minister was granted permission to teach Stephany; he was 18 when the enslaved were freed, and later passed his teacher's certification. He married Caroline Elizabeth Eaddy in December 1878; together they had 10 children. A senior deacon, store owner, and farmer, Stephany transitioned July 24, 1920. We are Forever Grahams.
Nelson Myers Graham appears in the 1860 slave schedule ("N. M. Graham, 61 slaves," Williamsburg Co). Stephany's exact birth & death dates are confirmed on FamilySearch (profile GS22-WL2) with 1910 census + SC death records. Lake City was originally named "Graham's Crossroads." Caroline's father Sampson Eaddy (1835β1916) is documented in a formerly-enslaved cemetery.
β οΈ One to confirm: the well-documented Lake City "St. James" is A.M.E. (Methodist), not Baptist β the family may want to verify.
We chose not to use the fleur-de-lis on our shirts or materials. Though beautiful and tied to Louisiana faith and heritage, under the French Code Noir it was used to brand fugitive enslaved people. We honor that history by leaving it off.
